Partaking in social media is one of my necessary evils. Likely many 40-somethings feel the same way—we were just not raised on this kind of communication. But as I try to get into the groove for this nouveau kind of gab, posting information on food matters that move me (good or bad) seems to be my shtick.
Read MoreNow, I am not an avid meat eater. In fact, if my body didn’t downright crave animal foods I would be a hardcore vegetarian. But it does so I thoughtfully nourish. Three weeks ago while waiting for the bus to take me from New York City to home, I popped into a newly opened fast casual joint (it was super cold outside and I was craving French fries). Glancing at the menu, I noticed that “100% all natural Angus beef, no hormones and no antibiotics ever” was center stage.
Read MoreI have experienced hunger in my life, but surely not the kind that 1 in 6 people in this country experience daily. My stomach may growl from time to time, and when it does, I feed it with healthy food. Sadly, for almost 50 million Americans that is just not the case.
Read MoreAre you tired of food labeling misbehavior? I sure as heck am. So a few weeks ago when I received The Natural Effect, a video that educates consumers about the artful use and abuse of this term by the food industry, I just couldn’t contain myself.
Read MoreI ditched bottled water long ago, only turning to it in an absolute pinch. It was a lecture at my kids school several years back when folks from Long Island Clean Water Partnership, Suffolk County Water Authority and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation came to town to talk about what I call liquid life.
Read MoreMy friend recently asked, “Who of all of our cronies has the best pantry?” Let me preface my answer by saying that the woman who asked knew that her's was not my top ranked larder (a running joke). I hesitantly answered as I have a general rule of thumb when I go to family and friends’ houses—to keep my mouth shut.
Read MoreI don’t have Cystic Fibrosis (CF)—an inherited chronic disease that affects the lungs and digestive systems of roughly 30,000 children and adults in the United States alone (70,000 worldwide)—rather my childhood friend, Tom Grotta, who is like an older brother does.
Read MoreReflecting back on family dinners during my adolescent and young adult life, one of my strongest memories is awaiting the inevitable question about world politics from my father. After too many to count occasions of silence, my dad just stopped asking. If I can’t speak intelligently about a topic, I prefer not to and when it came to the wonders of the world in my younger years, keeping my mouth shut was my best option.
Read MoreA few years ago a journalist contacted me regarding a story she was writing for a national health magazine. Her assignment was to highlight that a gluten-free diet was more nutritious than a gluten-containing diet and was indeed weight-loss promoting. Immediately a red flag went up but my ears were wide open.
Read MoreMy kid was born with feeding issues. I am thrilled to know that the powers that be have a sense of humor!
Shortly after Hunter (now almost 5-years old) was born, my sweet husband remained with him while the nurses did their necessary newborn testing in the nursery. As I was in and out of sleep, my man with little guy and nurse in tow came into the room to tell me this, “Hunter’s tongue is heart shaped.”
Read MoreDo you know that your meat—turkey, pork, beef and chicken—are dosed up on drugs (antibiotics) to help them grow faster and prevent infection in their overcrowded living quarters?
Read MoreOne of the most fascinating aspects of my one on one work is spending time learning about people and how experiences from childhood forward directly shaped their relationship with food. Whether good or bad, these experiences are our foundation of behaviors and habits and almost always serve as a roadmap for food lifestyle change.
Read MoreMy son Jack, now 7 ½, has been my supermarket sidekick since birth. Perusing through aisles we talk about food and read labels picking and choosing the familiar and sometimes not so familiar food products to buy.
Read MoreThe Arctic Apple is biotech’s new brainchild. Finally the perfect Pink Lady, Red Delish or Granny Smith. Butt (excuse the pun) is this truly the apple a day that can keep the doctor away? Hmmm…
Read MoreAt the young age of 2 ½ my son Hunter was diagnosed with Alopecia areata, an autoimmune disease that causes a person’s hair to fall out. He had a stomach virus one day and the next my husband and I noticed patches of hair loss on his small blonde head. With balding child in tow, our first stop was the family doctor who referred us to a pediatric dermatologist where we received the upsetting diagnosis. Our directive: Apply cortisone cream (a steroid) to the balding areas over the course of the next month and let’s see if the hair starts to grow back.
Read MoreWhen working one on one with folks, an extensive initial evaluation is in order. I meet peeps in the comfort of their own home and we chat for roughly two hours. One of the first questions I ask, “What are your goals in working with me?” And nine out of ten times weight loss is numero uno on the list (whether someone needs to lose weight or not).
Read MoreHave you ever seen Wall-E? In short, it’s a movie about a trash-collecting robot (Wall-E) that has spent his “life” collecting garbage from humans. When the movie begins, earth is ravaged with waste and no longer inhabitable. The movie’s message screams, “Hey earthlings, cut the overconsumption OR ELSE…”
Read MoreHave you ever taken your child (or grandchild) to the doctor for a “wellness” check-up (or even a sickness one) and upon leaving you hear the doctor, mid-sentence saying, “And what flavor would you like?” Yes, that would be the doctor offering your kid a lollipop and most likely the ones laced with sugar, artificial flavors and food dye. Seriously?
Read MoreDo you take supplements? If so, what are they and why are you taking them?
Read MoreMy mother recently had surgery at New York Cornell Hospital. Now, my mom is not one for medical procedures let alone major surgery so she took it upon herself to ensure that her hospital stay was as comfortable (and as posh) as possible. You’d never think my mom “posh” in any way however, deep down she likes her princess comforts. Welcome to the Greenberg Pavilion!
